Trent University boasts having one of the very best environment programs in Ontario and often takes advantage of its green spaces in various classes and labs. Despite its status of an environmentally friendly university, Trent is destroying much of its green spaces without so much as a proper environmental assessment to establish what species are effected. The lack of an assessment means they are able to claim plausible deniability to the many provincially listed species at risk and the species federally protected that depend on the wetlands being destroyed. The city has approved the destruction of the many green areas as the land was “given to them” by the university for the use of a hockey arena. Peterborough currently has several hockey arenas scattered around town and yet believe another one is needed. The site for the arena has been approved and awaiting distruction although many other areas around campus are already being destroyed to make way for housing and other facilities.
“It is a violent, penetrative act that scars what it explores. What you call discovery, I call the rape of the natural world.” (Dr. Ian Malcolm, 1993)
