Bermuda Skink
Plestiodon longirostris
Natural History:
The Bermuda Skink is perhaps the rarest lizard in the world with their entire wild population restricted to the tiny park of Spittal Pond and some coastal islands. They have become so rare as they compete with introduced anoles which include the Jamaican Anole, the Antiguan Anole and the Barbados Anole. Other threats include the introduction of predatory birds that prey on the Bermuda Skink along with other lizards. When I was in Bermuda I was hoping to see the Bermuda Skink in the wild but alas I was only able to see one in the Bermuda Zoo and Aquarium.
