Cuban White-Fanned Anole
Anolis homolechis
Natural History:
The Cuban White-Fanned Anole gets its name from the white dewlap under its chin of the male. Often many anoles look identical and for some the only method to determine the species is by examining the pattern and colour on the dewlap. Dewlaps can be found in all species of anoles but only in the males of the species. Their dewlap is primarily used as a method of nonverbal communication and is used to show dominance and to signal territory over a tree or even a female. Sometimes anoles will posses crests which act in part with the dewlap in order to appear larger then they really are.
Cuban White-Fanned Anoles are endemic to Cuba where they can be found sporadically over the island along with some coastal islands. This species of anole will inhabit a large amount of habitats but tend to stick to forested areas where there are large amounts of trees to climb and cover to hide under.
