Conservation: Han’s partner; Chewy, is a truly unique bird displaying behaviours never before recorded in this species. In the spring, she and another female came to Darlington Provincial Park to breed. Unfortunately for them, no male appeared so they made do, displaying courting behaviour to each other and building their own scratch or nest. Piping plovers lay one egg a day until three are laid. The nest chewy was watching over had five eggs suggesting that both females were using the nest. Sadly, a large storm destroyed the nest and the two females parted ways. Chewy came to Hanlan’s Point in Toronto and met Han, a first year male who is rather inexperienced. Because they were nesting so late in the year and so close to water, they were not expected to successfully breed. Despite the odds, Chewy and Han raised two chicks to fledge, a big win for such an Endangered species.
